Barcelona may be forced to explore alternative courses of action amid talk that Gerard Pique has vetoed a move for one of their targeted centre-backs.

Barcelona stalwart Gerard Pique has been a colossal figure for the Blaugrana in the heart of defence. The former Spain international formed a formidable pair beside Carles Puyol some years ago and has been doing really well alongside Clement Lenglet of late as well. However, he is now touching the dusk of his career and Barca need to look at potential replacements.

More from Everything Barca

Samuel Umtiti was touted to become one of Barca’s best players some years ago, but things did not go as per plan for the France international who continued to have a relapse of his injuries before and after the 2018 FIFA World Cup. As such, Umtiti is thought to be on his way out of the Camp Nou already as he is not content with the playing time coming his way.

Clement Lenglet promises to be a great player as the years go by, but Barcelona have looked at options to replace Gerard Pique. Kalidou Koulibaly and Milan Skriniar have been considered as likely targets, but in both the players are currently in a very defensive league and may not turn out to be as good as initially thought. Moreover, the Serie A defenders are valued at 100 million euros or more and have a host of other teams interested in them as well.

Don Balon has claimed that the La Liga leaders were looking at Athletic Bilbao man Unai Nunez as a potential signing over the last couple of weeks, but had their approaches vetoed by Gerard Pique. Nevertheless, Nunez is an incredible defender and all of his characteristics give Barca enough reason to go for him regardless of what Pique says.

Nunez has been incredibly good for the Basque side since Aymeric Laporte’s departure to Manchester City, but he has fallen behind Yeray Alvarez and Inigo Martinez in the pecking order this season. That being said, his release clause is only 30 million euros and Nunez has proven that he can do a great job whenever asked. The 22 year old is a fantastic choice for the Catalans.
