Barcelona have identified two alternatives to replace Luis Suarez as striker. But they will face stiff competition in their pursuit.

The search for a Luis Suarez replacement may be coming to an end as Barcelona have narrowed down their list to two names.

According to Mundo Deportivo, those two names are Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez and RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner. Much like everything in the world of transfer business, who the club chooses will come down to price.

Martinez has been rumored with a move for a while now. The issue with a possible move is his potential fee.

Inter Milan placed a €111 million release clause and are unlikely to negotiate down from it. The Catalans have made a huge investment like that the past three seasons to limited success.

Timo Werner, on the other hand, would be a more viable option. His release clause is only at €60 million and would leave the Catalans with money to spend elsewhere should they choose to do so.

The Inter Milan striker may have the advantage simply because the likes of Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi have publicly praised him and if it were up to them, he’d be their choice.

Regardless of who they decide on, neither of their signings will come easy. They will face competition from the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid.

The English giants have made their interest in Werner known with the German striker preferring a move to the Premier League. Real Madrid plan on possibly hijacking Barcelona’s move for Martinez as Karim Benzema is getting older and Luka Jovic has struggled to adapt to La Liga.

Barcelona’s inability to find a replacement for Suarez has come back to bite them the last couple of years. Injury and lack of form has plagued the Uruguayan striker with no alternatives and hoping that he simply finds his form by continually sticking him out there.

Given how much the club has spent on attacking players, they can ill-afford to get it wrong again. The squad is in desperate need of an overhaul. They need to get younger in nearly every area of the pitch, starting with the front line.
