Barcelona are thinking about showing the door to first-team manager Quique Setien, possibly making him their second casualty of the year.
Barcelona lost ground in the La Liga race and left their fate in Real Madrid’s hand following a 2-0 defeat in El Clasico at the hands of their fiercest rivals. The Catalans were completely undone in the second half after they failed to capitalize on multiple opportunities that came their way in the opening 45 minutes of the match.

Quique Setien has not been able to bring about a major change in the complexion of Barca’s playing style, apart from adding a bit more possession to the game. In addition to that, the former Real Betis manager has not done a much better job than Ernesto Valverde and faces an uncertainty over his job despite coming into the club just two months ago.
Don Balon has reported that if the Blaugrana fail to win any major trophy this season, they will not hesitate in relieving Quique Setien of his duties as the first-team manager. The Catalans would have sacked a manager for the second time this year should they do that, but they have already contacted Ronald Koeman to replace their current boss.
Ronald Koeman is currently coaching the Dutch national team but has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave the job for free if he heads to the Camp Nou. This clause contractual condition activates only after the Euro 2020, but given the coronavirus cases in Europe, there is a risk of the quadrennial tournament being cancelled, UEFA confirmed.
While Quique Setien may possibly face the same fate as his predecessor, it’s high time that the Catalans realise that it’s the players who are underperforming and however good a manager is, they are bound to go down if Lionel Messi doesn’t turn up. Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and all their lucrative signings have failed.
In addition to this, the Blaugrana made some rough decisions over the last couple of months and were unable to keep hold of younger players such as Carles Perez, who showed a great amount of promise but signed for AS Roma in search of more playing time. The bottom line is that Barca’s players need to perform better and the manager’s job would become easier.
Do you think Quique Setien deserves to go if he can’t win La Liga or Champions League?
