Barcelona could lose out on one of their main summer targets if Real Madrid speed up their pursuit of the Brazilian superstar.

Barcelona are expected to be in the market for a defensive midfielder sooner or later. Sergio Busquets will turn 32 later this year and has failed to put in consistent displays as he would some years ago. The Spaniard is still a regular in the team, but that may be the case due to a lack of competition in his position since a few seasons.

More from Everything Barca

Frenkie de Jong is capable of playing in a defensive midfielder’s position, but that’s a very impeded role for the Netherlands international who excels and makes his mark by playing in an advanced position more often than not. Given that the La Masia also has been slack in its production of late, Barca will have to look externally.

Eduardo Camavinga has been seen as a potential option by the Blaugrana, but the Brazilian youngster’s stock in the market is high. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are all interested in signing him from Rennes after an explosive season at the age of just 17. Rennes will be prepared to sell him during the summer for 42 million euros.

Diario GOL has claimed that the player is not interested in playing alongside Lionel Messi and instead would like to hone his skills under Zinedine Zidane. Therefore, Real Madrid have been tipped as frontrunners in the race for the Brazilian. Los Blancos have showed major interest in copping up young talents in the last few years, with Eduardo being another one from their radar.

Los Merengues are keen on signing a replacement for Casemiro who is now 28 years old. The Brazil international has been indispensable for Zidane, but there is no backup for him in the squad. Federico Valverde can play defensively, but his preferred role is further forward. That being said, Barca will lose out on a generational star if Camavinga joins Real Madrid.
