Barcelona want to sign a versatile midfielder and believe they found their man in the Premier League.

Gone are the days where Barcelona boasted the best midfield trio in the world in Xavi Hernandez, Sergio Busquets and Andres. With Xavi and Iniesta leaving and Busquets in the twilight of his career, the midfield has not been the same.

Under Luis Enrique, the midfield became an after thought with the focus shifting to the front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar. Without a dominating midfield, the club have struggled. Frenkie de Jong was signed in the offseason to try to shore up that area but he’s only one man.

Barcelona have made the midfield a priority yet again and are looking for a player who is both versatile and can fit the system.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the club has found that player in Tottenham’s Tanguy Ndombele.

The 23-year-old was on Barcelona’s radar last season before he signed with the London-based side.

The Catalans like him because they believe he’s a modern midfielder who can play in the center of the pitch as well as an interior.

One of the reasons they think they can sign him is his relationship with Jose Mourinho, the Tottenham manager, is strained at best.

Mourinho has not been discrete in his disappointment with the Frenchman and publicly criticized him after the team’s draw a couple of weeks ago against Burnley.

"“I know the Premier League is difficult, and some players take a long time to adapt to a different league.“But a player with his [Ndombele] potential has to give us more than he is giving us, especially when you see how Lucas, Lo Celso and those players are playing. I was expecting more in the first half from him.”Source: BBC"

With Mourinho, once you’re on his bad side it’s going to take a lot to get on his good side. Just ask the likes of Iker Casillas at Real Madrid and Luke Shaw at Manchester United.

Barcelona want to take advantage of that situation and plan to reach out to him and his representatives to see if he would be interested in joining.

Their interest comes with the plan that both Ivan Rakitic and Arturo are set to leave once the season is over. But with Carles Aleña coming back from loan and Riqui Puig ready to take the next step, at this point, going after Ndombele seems more of a want than a need.
