Lionel Messi issues Barcelona a new ultimatum on his future

Lionel Messi issues Barcelona a new ultimatum on his future at the club, the Argentine demands the club to sign a defender or he leaves.

Lionel Messi’s future at Barcelona was highly uncertain this season after his major fallout with technical director Eric Abidal and the club president Josep Maria Bartomeu. The Barca captain was quite hesitant about the leadership qualities of the president and whether his long term plans would benefit the club.

Apart from insisting the club to sign Neymar or Lautaro Martinez, the Argentine captain has insisted the club to reinforce their weak defence. He has requested the board to sign a young quality player who can be a long-term asset for the club at the club.

Don Balon claims that the Catalan club has listed Dayot Upamecano as a potential signing for next season to be a regular starter at the club. The 21-year-old French defender has impressed several top-flight clubs after his rapid progression in the Bundesliga. Barca believes that the young French defender could be a long term project as well as a regular starter from next season.

Barcelona has prepared to offer 50 million euros for the player who has a release clause set at 60 million euros. Dayot Upamecano’s contract with the Bundesliga side runs out in 2021 and his refusal to renew a contract, provides a new window of opportunity for Barca to pounce on.

If Barcelona does consider signing Upamecano, action must be taken immediately as rumours state that Arsenal, Chelsea, and Bayern have shown great interest in signing the French defender.
