Matthijs de Ligt was tipped to sign for Barcelona next season before he decided to join Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus, however, now the player wants to return to the Catalan club.

The former Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt had stunned the world last season with his defensive capabilities and was indispensable in the defence like his compatriot Virgil Van Dijk. His impressive performances had won several hearts at the board of Barcelona who considered signing him as a potential replacement for Gerard Pique.

The Dutch International decided to join Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus and his teammate Frenkie de Jong signed for Barcelona. A year later it seems like both the former teammates regret their decision.

Juventus paid 85 million euros to Ajax after Cristiano Ronaldo convinced him to sign for the Bianconeri after the UEFA Nations League Final. The Ajax Captain signed for Juventus with high expectations and so far the Dutch defender has been a massive disappointment.

Giorgio Chiellini’s ACL tear at the start of the season was a blessing in disguise for De Ligt as it was his opportunity to cement a place in the starting eleven. However, the Dutch international has performed at a rather poor level and several pundits have already written him as the flop signing of the summer of 2019-20. Former Chelsea boss was patient with the young defender, however, in the end, Merih Demiral had to replace the star signing of Juventus.

De Ligt must thank his lucky stars as the Turkish International also succumbed to injuries during the season. The Dutch international was given an opportunity for redemption, which he wasted once again.

The defender’s agent has already spoken to Manchester United for a possible transfer next season. However, De Ligt wants to move to Barcelona, where he was expected to sign last season.

Don Balon claims that the former Ajax captain loves the city of Barcelona and he would be happier at the Catalan club as he would have his close friend Frenkie de Jong by his side.
