The current Barca squad has a few players who have already entered the twilight years of their careers. Some of the players who are past their thirties are Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal, Gerard Pique, and captain Lionel Messi.
Unfortunately, in 2021 another Barcelona legend would be leaving the squad for the MLS and he has already confided in his close friend Lionel Messi. According to Don Balon, Gerard Pique has warned Messi that he will leave the club in the summer of 2021. The World Cup winner’s contract runs out in 2022 and the player would turn 35 by then, he believes that 2021 would be the ideal time to bid goodbye to the institution that has given him everything.
If Gerard Pique does leave the club in 2021, then the departure of Samuel Umtiti will come to a standstill as the club would require an immediate backup. The Catalan club still considers signing Matthijs de Ligt as a long term replacement of Gerard Pique, however, it could be another risky signing as the Dutch international has been awful at Juventus.
The Spanish defender has shown interest in signing for David Beckham’s Inter Miami in the United States of America. The player’s wife is all for the possible transfer as she loves the United States and it would make her professional career in music a lot easier.
If Pique does leave in 2021, then Barcelona would be left with only Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets who have been part of the club’s history. The club must plan for the future once Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets hang up their boots.
