Barcelona had the opportunity to sign Edison Cavani from Paris Saint-Germain as a free signing in the coming summer transfer market before Lionel Messi stepped in.
Barcelona is in a desperate need of a striker as Luis Suarez is way past his prime and the Uruguayan international has not aged well either. Barca’s emergency signing Martin Braithwaite seems like a promising replacement, however, it would be a massive risk for the club to rely on the Danish forward to be their main striker for an entire season.

Lautaro Martinez was tipped to be the replacement of Luis Suarez by the board, however, the suspension of football worldwide has been a massive blow to most of the club’s financial backing. Inter Milan also demands 111 million euros for their Argentine forward, given the current circumstances, it is unlikely that Barca could meet the demands set by the Italian club.
With an injured Luis Suarez and an unexperienced Martin Braithwaite, the Blaugrana’s had the perfect opportunity to sign a world-class striker for free in the coming summer transfer window.
Barcelona had the opportunity to sign Edinson Cavani for free this coming summer transfer market before Lionel Messi stepped in and vetoed the possible move, according to Don Balon
Although Edinson Cavani may not be the perfect replacement for Luis Suarez, the Parisian striker has played in the topflight division for several years and has scored over 300 career goals. Unlike Lautaro Martinez, the PSG striker does not lack experience and would easily handle the pressure at the Camp Nou.
However, Lionel Messi has his reasons for vetoing the Paris Saint-Germain striker. The first issue was the high salary demanded by the former Napoli striker, the Catalan club would have to pay the forward 10 million euros per year, a figure that the club cannot afford under their current circumstances.
The other reason that Lionel Messi believed was that Luis Suarez’s involvement in games would drastically reduce and the captain believes that he cannot afford to lose the former Liverpool forward as they share a partnership like no other.
Edinson Cavani could have been the addition that Barcelona requires given their current financial backing.
