Barcelona’s famed stadium name ‘Camp Nou’ is to be sold for one year in order to raise money to fight the ongoing pandemic.

La Liga is going to be played behind closed doors until 2021 and the squad could potentially be playing their games at the Johan Cruyff stadium instead. Barcelona’s board have confirmed that they will be donating the entire amount raised by selling the naming rights of the stadium to help battle the COVID-19 pandemic.

More from Everything Barca

Being the biggest stadium in Europe with over 99,000 seats, Camp Nou is one of a kind as it has never had a sponsor since its construction in 1957.

"“We want to send a universal message: For the first time someone will have the opportunity to put their name on Camp Nou and the revenues will go to all of humanity, not just Barca, The initiative arose in an emergency situation. We think that we have to have a very quick response, putting our crown jewel at the service.” Jordi Cardoner, Barca Vice President, told The Associated PressSource Fox Sports"

The sale of the naming rights had been previously discussed when the club had planned to give this opportunity for the 2023-24 season as they looked to bring €300 million ($326m) in a contract spanning 25 years that would help finance the renovation of the stadium along with other facilities.

The current sale does not include the long term association but Cardoner has said that if the potential sponsor wishes to have an extended relation, the club would consider the offer. The stadium will surely keep the title of ‘Camp Nou’ but in addition will include the sponsor as well.

"“Camp Nou is sending out an S.O.S., We are open to everything. We want to maximize the economic participation and to ensure that the partners share our same social values,” said Jordi."

ESPN has reported that the remaining La Liga matches are to be played behind closed doors until 2021. The clubs have been made aware of this decision along with a statement that the stadiums will be reopened in January 2021 following strict safety measures.

Though the date for when the Spanish football will resume has yet to be announced, June seems to be the speculated month.

The Guardian reported that the teams would hopefully start their training in mid-May where the sessions will be divided into 3 stages. Initially, there will be the ‘Individual’ training which can slowly move into live online sessions. Finally, once the situation gets better, the teams can conduct training with the complete squad.

The club (pending player’s approval) may decide to play their games at the Johan Cruyff stadium as it is adjacent to the training facilities thus decreasing the amount of travel required. Another advantage is that it would be more cost-efficient to conduct matches there as it is a smaller stadium thus reducing the electricity, security and other facilities needed to operate.
