Barcelona are on the verge of losing another defender in the summer transfer window.

More from Everything Barca

Barcelona has had a terrible defensive record this season. Despite having one of the best goalkeepers in the world Marc-Andre ter Stegen the club has managed to hold a poor defensive record in La Liga, and one of their worst since the last few years.

The Spanish giants plan to make significant adjustments to their backline in the upcoming transfer window. Barca is set to lose Samuel Umtiti and Junior Firpo. Both the players are currently negotiating transfer offers away from the Camp Nou. According to the Don Balon, the club has added Nelson Semedo to this list.

Semedo’s agent Jorge Mendes and Barcelona had been discussing a contract extension for the player to stay in the Camp Nou. The club was on the verge of agreeing a deal but has decided to go against this process due to the outbreak of coronavirus. The outbreak of the virus has economically weakened Barcelona due to the suspension of football and most commercial activities. Quique Setien feels that listing the Portuguese international for 45 million euros in the upcoming transfer market might be a better move for the club.

Manchester City has shown great interest in signing Semedo. This is due to the fact that Joao Cancelo has failed to impress Pep Guardiola and is on the verge of leaving the club. Pep has seen great potential in Semedo and has promised to make the defender a future star under his wings. However, the defender from Barca might refuse to join Manchester City as this would mean that he would miss out on playing in Europe’s prime competition, the Champions League and may not necessarily get a starting berth courtesy of Kyle Walker.

Another club which has been heavily linked with the Portuguese defender is Juventus. Cristiano Ronaldo has requested Semedo to join him in Italy. The young defender has been tempted by this offer and has shown signs that he is keen to join his countryman in Italy. Juventus are yet to send a transfer offer for the player and might not agree to spend 45 million euros to sign him, especially with Mattia de Sciglio and Danilo already on their roster.

If Semedo ends up being signed by either of the two clubs Barcelona could use the 45 million euros to bring a world-class defender to the Camp Nou who could help ease the pressure of Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet who haven’t been overused the entire season.

Do you think Semedo must leave Barca in the upcoming transfer window?
