One of the best central defenders in the world could be on his way to Barcelona from Manchester City in a surprising transfer this summer.

One of the top priorities in the Barcelona offices is the signing of a central defender in the upcoming transfer window. Samuel Umtiti is expected to depart the club in the coming months, whereas Gerard Pique has caught up with age and is certainly beyond his prime. Clement Lenglet is slowly peaking but needs a reliable partner in the centre of defence.

Don Balon has reported that the Blaugrana are ready to sanction a surprise transfer for Manchester City’s central defender Aymeric Laporte during the summer. The Citizens could face an exodus of players with their most recent Champions League ban and one of them could be a major loss, just two and a half year since signing on.

Aymeric Laporte has become an indispensable player in Pep Guardiola’s system over the last few months. The Frenchman’s physique and aerial abilities to win back possession, as well as composure while playing the ball from the back make him a player fit for Man City’s as well as Barca’s system and without him, the Premier League giants did suffer.

Since his days at the San Mames, Laporte has caught the attention of several top clubs around the world and has only gone and created a bigger name for himself in England. Given his age and experience, it is fair to say that the player has the quality to play at the Camp Nou on a regular basis and more importantly succeed Gerard Pique at the club.
