Barcelona will not pursue a transfer anymore for their former player after his demands have put them off once and for all.

Barcelona have made no secret of their interest in signing Neymar for the second time since his departure to Paris Saint-Germain for a world-record fee of 222 million euros. The Brazil international was never able to find his feet at the Parc des Princes and his first two years at the club were marred by injuries and other off-field controversies.

More from Everything Barca

Last summer when Neymar resorted to boycotting training sessions, it looked like a transfer back to Spain was on the cards for him. However, nothing materialized with regards to a transfer and the winger ended up staying in France. He is now enjoying his best season in the Ligue 1 but the talk of him wanting to return to Barca is still alive and running.

Don Balon has claimed that the former Santos superstar has made his demands clear to the Blaugrana. His ask of Josep Maria Bartomeu is that he pays an annual salary of 40 million euros, the exact amount as what Lionel Messi earns. The Catalans are unwilling to match Neymar’s wage demands and will only think about paying the salary when the number 10 hangs up his boots.

Neymar’s constant demanding and relentless pursuit of money over challenges has resulted in the La Liga leaders pulling the plug on his potential move to the Camp Nou. The club has taken a right call with respect to their former superstar amid their latest financial troubles and especially because of the antics the player fell back on during and after his exit.

The Brazil international was increasingly looking regretful of the transfer made to Paris by him in spite of the Spanish outfit wanting to keep him. In addition to that, he involved himself in a training ground bust up with Nelson Semedo and following his move to the French capital, Neymar even filed a legal allegation against Barcelona over unpaid contract bonuses.

Indeed if anything, Josep Maria Bartomeu is leading a show of self-respect in front of a player who offers no guarantee of staying in case another big money offer comes calling some years down the line. At this point in time, the Catalans need defensive reinforcements more than in the final third and therefore, breaking the bank on Neymar was never the right choice.
