Despite the fact that Barcelona are the current leaders of La Liga, they have upheld a terrible defensive record this season conceding 31 goals in 27 league games.

More from Everything Barca

Barcelona’s defence is set to lose Samuel Umtiti and Junior Firpo in the upcoming transfer window. The Spanish giants have been scanning the transfer market for world-class replacements for the duo who can help to fortify the backline of the Camp Nou.

Quique Setien has listed David Alaba as a potential transfer target that the club could sign in place of the duo and has been considering whether the club should start negotiating an offer with his agent.

The Austrian international has decided against restoring his contract negotiations with Bayern Munich and wants to experience playing football in another country. Many believe this is also caused because Alaba is frustrated by the fact that he’s been played as a centre-back this season instead of playing in his natural position as a left-back. Many other clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Liverpool have shown interest in signing the Austrian defender.

As things stand Real Madrid have taken the lead to sign Alaba. Zinedine Zidane has been desperate to find a replacement for Marcelo Vieira who hasn’t been able to contribute sufficiently to the defence of the Santiago Bernabeu. To state the Don Balon, Zidane is very close to meeting an agreement with the the defender’s representatives and is positive over sealing the transfer over the next few days. Alaba should have an estimated market value of around 55 million euros.

Barcelona have been hit hard by the coronavirus and won’t be able to match up to the valuation of 55 million Euros set for the Austrian considering the fact that Lionel Messi has convinced the club to utilize their limited resources to sign either Neymar or Lautaro Martinez in the upcoming transfer window.

The Spanish giants must reassess their defensive options and try to sign cheaper players who can provide the club with similar value such as Alex Telles or Lucas Digne to fortify their backline.
