Barcelona have been ripped inside out after being mislead by Pep Guardiola and in-turn missing out on a superb signing for the summer.

Barcelona are expected to undergo major changes to their squad in the summer. The Catalans need to bring in players for every position as such, because in all fairness their performances over the course of this season and in all competitions have been lacklustre despite a managerial change being made.

More from Everything Barca

Despite their poor defensive record which has seen them ship 31 goals in 27 league matches this season, the club has decided to go for a winger or striker first and foremost instead of a defensive player. Lautaro Martinez and Neymar are the key targets for Barcelona and they will be able to sign just one of the two, or probably neither given the financial stress.

While Neymar was their primary man in a bid to sign a long-term left winger, the Paris Saint-Germain superstar’s asking price was too expensive for Barca. In addition to that, they would have to meet his wage demands and pay him several other bonuses and doing so could have put their future plans under jeopardy.

As an alternative to the Brazil international, the Blaugrana had identified Manchester City winger Leroy Sane. The Citizens’ Champions League ban means that they may face an exodus of player, with the Germany international being amongst the first ones out as he was interested in leaving last summer as well.

However, Pep Guardiola played a traitor’s role against the club of his lifetime and blocked Sane from signing with the La Liga leaders by supposedly saying that he was already bound to the Bundesliga whereas there wer , Don Balon has reported. The former Barca player and manager decided against selling the former Schalke man to the Camp Nou outfit because that would boost them marginally and with more funds in the bank.

Leroy Sane’s asking price of 100 million euros was very much within the rich of Barcelona, but the player now seems to be in advanced negotiations with Bayern Munich over a move across the pond to Germany in the next transfer window. Having said that, Pep definitely played a masterstroke in nullifying his former side from becoming a superpower again.

Real Madrid’s faithful would definitely be happy with the fact that Sane wouldn’t be heading to the Camp Nou as he promises to be a major threat to any opponent. But the thinking at Barcelona would be different and more so, because one of their own has betrayed them and perhaps their chances of lifting the Champions League in the next few years.

For the moment, Neymar’s transfer seems well beyond the 5-time European Cup winners and that for Lautaro Martinez also looks like a complicated issue amid Inter Milan’s notorious demands. Timo Werner has been closely linked with a move to the Camp Nou and it may be a blessing in disguise, as the player’s lesser transfer worth may help the Blaugrana in signing a good defender.

Do you think Barca’s board is to be blamed for their failure in landing Sane or is it Pep’s mindset that harmed the club’s chances?
