Barcelona needs to try and utilize the club’s lack of funds to strengthen their defence in the upcoming transfer window.

More from Everything Barca

In the past few seasons, Barcelona have been scouting the transfer market to locate a long-term replacement for Jordi Alba who is 31 years old and has a few years of football left ahead of him. Alba is past his prime and no more the player he was a couple of years ago, at least in terms of defending.

The Catalans had signed Junior Firpo in 2019 but due to a string of inconsistent and insufficient performances the young Spaniard has failed to impress Quique Setien and after playing one season he has found himself on a list of players the club are planning to sell.

There is speculation that the defending La Liga champions have identified 23-year-old England international Ben Chilwell from Leicester City to be a potential signing for Barcelona as stated by the Don Balon. The left-back has become an extremely dependable player over the past few seasons, having displayed great stability while defending for his team as well as wonderful ability to orchestrate effective attacks from the back by acting as an elusive attacking wingback.

Leicester City have received many transfer offers for the their budding defender and have decided that they would consider offers of around a transfer fee of 50 million euros for the transfer of their young English defender.

Even though Lionel Messi has demanded the club to use its resources to sign the offensive duo of Lautaro Martinez and Neymar in the summer transfer window, the Spanish giants shouldn’t do so and use their transfer budget to sign Chilwell instead.

Signing Ben Chilwell would help ease the pressure off the club’s backline and will help them secure a stable player in their left-back position over a long period of time considering the fact that he is only 23 and has shown signs to develop into one of best defenders in the world. Moreover, it will reduce the pressure off Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet who have had to cover up for Firpo’s inconsistent performances throughout the course of this season and thus enable them to perform better in the upcoming season.
