Barcelona has turned down Lionel Messi’s recent suggestion to sign a world-class player and have opted for a cheaper alternative.

Nelson Semedo might be on his way out from Barcelona in the summer transfer market and the Catalan club would require an immediate backup to fill in the void by the Portuguese fullback.

Rumours earlier stated that Manchester City had shown interest in signing Nelson Semedo as a backup for Kyle Walker after Joao Cancelo has fallen out with Pep Guardiola over lack of game time. The former Premier League champions had considered a possible swap deal that would see both the Portuguese fullback’s switch clubs. However, the situation regarding Joao Cancelo seems to be complicated after the former Turin man is unsure about whether he would want to continue at the Ethiad Stadium or not after having played just half a season.

Meanwhile, Barcelona continues their search for a first-team quality right-back and Lionel Messi’s first preference of choice is the German versatile footballer, Joshua Kimmich. However, Josep Maria Bartomeu had to turn down the captain’s request to sign the Bavarian footballer since Bayern Munich have no intention of letting their future captain leave and nor do the Catalans have the financial backing to meet the hefty market value of Joshua Kimmich.

The cheaper alternative that the Blaugrana has considered is a former La Masia graduate and Premier League footballer, Hector Bellerin. The Spanish full-back started his career in England at full pace and was tipped to be the next world-class full-back, however, a series of long-term injuries severely hampered the player’s growth and game time.

Although Hector Bellerin’s growth was stunned by his injuries, the former La Masia graduate has kept himself fit by preventing any long-term injuries over the last two seasons and Don Balon claims that Bartomeu has considered the player to be the ideal cheaper alternative.

The Arsenal full-back believes that he has once again found his feet and that a player of his caliber requires to compete in the Champions League which the Catalan club can promise. After 7 seasons with Gunners, a new challenge in Spain would be ideal for the 25-year-old who has failed to win a league title or a significant European trophy.
