The hysterical and unnecessary signings at Barcelona may continue after the club has been heavily linked with a Belgian Premier League superstar.

In the past few seasons Barcelona has made a few hysterical signings and a few flop signings as well including the likes of Paulinho, Alex Song, Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele, and Andre Gomes.

Don Balon reportedly claims that the Catalan board is heavily linked with another hysterical signing if the operation falls through, the Blaugrana along with Real Betis are set to compete to sign Jose Mourinho’s unwanted Belgian defender, Jan Vertonghen.

Jan Vertonghen has been the heart and the warrior of Tottenham Hotspur’s defence along with Toby Alderweireld for the last couple of years, however, unfortunately, the 33-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam defender has struggled with age as his performances no longer meet the expectations that Jose Mourinho demands from a central defender.

Although the number “5” of Tottenham Hotspur’s contract runs out next month, the defender is keen on signing an extension of two years as he believes that the club could finally win some silverware under the tactical guidance of Jose Mourinho. However, the former Real Madrid coach does not have plans to accommodate his Belgian defender and would most probably sign a replacement in the coming summer or give Japhet Tangana the first-team role after his admirable performances this season.

Since Jose Mourinho has no plans for the former Ajax man, the player has no option but to leave his legacy behind at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and search for a new club. Despite being 33-years-old, the Belgian has years of experience and still has the quality left in him to perform for another season or two at the top-flight club but making the move to Barcelona would not benefit either of the parties.

The Blaugrana should instead focus on giving Ronald Araujo and Jean-Clair Todibo a shot at the first team in the coming season instead of singing a 33-year-old defender. If the board does insist on signing a defender in the summer, then there are better options in the market such as Dayot Upamecano, Luiz Felipe, and Caglar Soyuncu.

However, the board at Camp Nou is known to make unnecessary signings and this might be the next one that would be an absolute waste despite being a free transfer.
