Should Barcelona consider signing the “Greek God of Rome”?

Peter Drury dubbed Kostas Manolas as the ” Greek God in Rome” after his towering header against Barcelona from the corner kick sent Roma into the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League  2017/18 season. The header of Kostas Manolas still haunts the Camp Nou and the words of Peter Drury still rings bells in the fan’s ears of Barca.

In the 2019/20 season, Napoli had reached an agreement with Roma after successfully triggering the 34 million euro release clause and the Greek defender signed a five-year contract that would see the former Roma man earn 4.5 million euros annually.

However, half a season into 2019-20, the Serie A was one of the first leagues to be suspended as the infection rates of the COVID-19 virus continue to spread across the country like wildfire. Despite playing just 8 months of football for his new club Napoli, the Greek defender has reportedly considered a move away from Italy this summer and preferably to Real Madrid to win trophies as the player is set to turn 29 next month and has entered his prime years as a defender.

Since the former Roma defender has considered a move away from Italy, Barcelona should consider signing the 28-year-old defender this summer since the club faces a severe crisis in the backline. With Samuel Umtiti sidelined with a long term injury, Gerard Pique seeming rustier than ever due to age and Clement Lenglet considering a shocking move away from the Camp Nou, Barcelona finds themselves in a serious mess.

Despite the defense at Barca being in shambles, Josep Maria Bartomeu has reportedly considered selling Jean-Clair Todibo this summer to Everton after showing his promising talent in Germany while on loan, according to the Express.

With a severe lack in-depth in the defence, Josep Maria Bartomeu and his officials must consider signing Kostas Manolas this summer to add depth and experience to the defence despite being heavily linked to a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The possible signing of the Greek defender would benefit Quique Setien since the player offers a threat in the air and has the skill that is required in building up the attack from the back and he also possesses the quality to easily mark quick forwards due to his physical presence and capability. Due to his body-built and his size, the Greek international can easily maneuver around the backline and help the defence maintain a high line while he plays the role of a stopper.

Overall, Kostas Manolas is the perfect mix of an old traditional defender along with a modern attacking defender. If Barca consider signing the Napoli man, a figure worth 40 million euros would suffice and it would not cause much of an issue for the Catalans despite their current economic crisis

Should Barcelona seek redemption and sign the player who once knocked them out for 40 million euros this summer?
