The French international is widely known for his love for NBA but made a premature claim that he wants to end his footballing days playing for a team in the United States. The Los Angeles Times reported that the former Atletico Madrid player announced on a Zoom interview conducted by Barca that he wishes to retire elsewhere.
"“Winning La Liga and the Champions League with Barca would be a dream, and also my objective, after that winning whatever comes. There’s another World Cup so the World Cup in Qatar. And after that MLS.” Griezmann said.“I don’t know with which team, but I really want to play there. For me it’s an objective to end my career in the United States with the possibility of playing well and being a big part of the team and fighting for a title.”Source Los Angeles Times."
The 29-year-old acknowledges the fact that he has many more competitions and titles to win with his current club. He mentioned that the move will likely happen post the 2022 FIFA world cup in Qatar meaning the footballer will be 31 at the time and nearing his retirement.
The Frenchman signed a five-year contract with Barca last year worth around 95 million dollars but has been struggling to adapt ever since. He has been linked with a move to major European clubs to boost Barca’s finances before June 30. The player has already rejected Paris Saint-Germain and only Premier League giants such as Manchester United and Newcastle United remain that can afford the player.
If Barca does decide against the sale of Antoine, then they may still manage to consider his plans of joining MLS in 2022 as it is not the first time a Barca player has been linked with a move to the American soccer league.
Luis Suarez was linked with a move to David Beckham’s newly established MLS side, Inter Miami, for 70 million euros. Beckham has been vocal of wanting to sign a marquee player in the near future and may in fact manage to sign the likes of Suarez and Griezmann as both the forwards move closer to their eventual retirement from European football.
Should Barca sell Antoine Griezmann to MLS for big money?
