Pep Guardiola makes a staggering demand from Barcelona.

Manchester City youngster Eric Garcia is on the Barcelona radar and the latest addition to their list of potential centre-back signings. The 19 year old was indeed a former La Masia product and spent nine years in the acclaimed academy before setting out to England. His improvement in the Premier League is why the Blaugrana want him back.

More from Everything Barca

Eric Garcia has not featured prominently for Pep Guardiola’s first-team but has been given occasional runs in the cup competitions. In the 2019/20 campaign, he has made six league appearances and a rigorous gameplay coupled with constant amelioration in quality is reason enough for Barca to rightly pursue a move for him.

Not much has been made of the player’s value as yet but given his calibre, something in the 20 million euro range must be an ideal price tag. Given that the Citizens would struggle to sign quality players as a result of their Champions League ban, Pep must have wanted to keep Garcia in his roster but has shockingly made an audacious demand from Barca, according to Don Balon.

Two sides to consider about Busquets.

Guardiola is comfortable with parting company with Eric Garcia but wants Sergio Busquets in return. The duo worked together for four years at the Camp Nou and in fact it was the ex-Bayern Munich manager himself who discovered the defensive midfielder’s talents and promoted to the first-team. At 31, Busquets has aged and is not as good and consistent.

Back in the day, the Spain international was inarguably the world’s best in his position but it’s fair to say that in recent years, the likes of Casemiro and Kante have done better than him. Not to mention, one of the reasons for his poor displays could be the fact that there has been no backup since a few years besides the ageing factor.

While some may argue that the Catalans must sacrifice the last remaining piece of their golden midfield, this must not be done in favour of a 19 year old who still has a lot to prove. Moreover, rather than sacrificing Busquets, Barca must bring in his replacement and keep rotating between the two so as to get the best out of both their defensive midfielders.
