Barcelona and its incompetent board led by Bartomeu

The current board under Josep Maria Bartomeu as the president and Eric Abidal as the director of football has probably been the worst board of officials that Barcelona has ever had for years. Under previous presidential rules, signing superstars from top European clubs was always the objective on the agenda while also focusing on their local talent from the La Masia, however, under the reign of Josep Maria Bartomeu, the club has focused solely on expensive signings which have turned out as flops.

Some of the expensive flop signings under Bartomeu and his team have been Arda Turan from Atletico Madrid, Andre Gomes from Valencia, Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool, and Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund who cost the club approximately 145 million euros including all expenses and has missed about 60 matches in 3 seasons.

Lionel Messi’s dominance at Barcelona

With a corrupt and incompetent board, Lionel Messi along with Gerard Pique had no other option but to step up and take matters in their own hands. As a footballer, it is not Messi’s or Pique’s duty to have a say in how the club works or have a powerful during decision makings carried out by the board, nonetheless, the duo together for the past few seasons have had a major say at how things run at the club due to the lack of confidence towards the board.

However, the number 10 of Barcelona’s dictatorship has now turned toxic after the Argentine forward vetoed d the signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, according to the reports from Spain.

Vetoing Jadon Sancho might be the worst ever decision made by Leo Messi as the Englishman is the best shot the Blaugrana have at finding a replacement for their Argentine forward. Messi’s current contract expires in 2021 and Bartomeu is currently planning on an extension, however, if Messi does decline the extension or if he retires a season or two after extending his contract, Barcelona would be in a crisis post the Messi era.

Since Jadon Sancho has been vetoed, the favourites to sign the Englishmen are Liverpool who lost out to Timo Werner, Chelsea, and Manchester United. Jadon Sancho could have been the perfect replacement Barca needed for a post-Messi-era, however, Lionel Messi’s dominance has turned the situation around.
