Quique Setien has undoubtedly transformed his tactics and gameplay over the duration of lockdown to improve on Barca’s struggles to control the pace of the match. The Blaugrana philosophy of controlling a match by having the most possession was starting to fade away with former coach Ernesto Valverde.
Setien’s arrival at Camp Nou brought back the hope of witnessing Barca perform with a purpose and that was very much evident in yesterday’s dominance over Mallorca. A common practice during the match was how Setien forced the ball towards the left flank in order to attract the opponents towards the forward pushing Jordi Alba and Frenkie de Jong.
The ball would then be quickly rotated to the other side with Sergi Roberto, who would attack in a similar fashion as Jordi Alba, connecting with Lionel Messi to dominate the attacking half. Barca are seeing signs of improvement both on and off the ball with Setien looking to improve on the things that still need some work.
The Catalans have been struggling to perform when away from Camp Nou but their performance against Mallorca shows significant improvement, especially considering it was the first match in a long time.
