Barcelona and Lionel Messi are inevitably going to agree to a new deal.

Barcelona were held to a 0-0 stalemate against Sevilla on Friday as Real Madrid capitalized on their subsequent opportunity to draw level on points but lead the La Liga standings on a head-to-head basis. Lionel Messi came closest to grabbing the Catalans’ decisive goal, only to have his free-kick and 700th Barca goal thwarted by the opposition.

More from Everything Barca

Up next for the Blaugrana is the fixture against Athletic Bilbao, which they would want to win to keep the heat on in the running to Spain’s summit. Messi will look for a goal or two and a memorable performance in a fixture one day prior to his birthday. Besides that, a contract extension could be another gift on the Argentine’s special day.

Lionel Messi’s contract at the Camp Nou expires next summer and technically, he will be allowed to negotiate with another club from January. However, there is no secret over the fact that all concerned parties want a prolonged association and they are close to agreeing on new terms which will keep the forward at the club beyond his current deal.

A short stay with no increments for Messi

El Desmarque has reported that the Barca captain will sign a short two year contract with an option a free departure at the end of every season. This would be to give Messi comfort that he is truly playing at the highest football and fitness levels. Moreover, there would be no increase in salary as compared to the 32 year old’s current earning.

In order to quicken the process and ensure no lapses, Josep Maria Bartomeu is personally involving himself in the deal and holding talks with Messi’s father, Jorge, and other agency representatives. While there is no fixed date just year over when the renewal announcement would be made, there is optimism about an update coming soon.
