Barcelona’s interest in a key target has been thwarted by Real Madrid.

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara has been in the thick of the transfer news for the last couple of months. A lot has been made about the former Barcelona man’s future at the Allianz Arena and after being tipped to renew his contract for a few weeks, the player has decided to move on to newer beginnings.

More from Everything Barca

La Liga leaders Real Madrid as well as their arch rivals Barcelona are keen on signing the Spain international, who despite being 30 is one of the world’s best midfielders. Not to mention, he is still an indispensable part of the national side which boasts some incredible talents from various teams.

Diario GOL has claimed that Thiago has now made a decision on his future. Having already played and succeeded for the Blaugrana, the Bayern creator will be on his move and await an offer from Real Madrid. Playing under Zinedine Zidane is one of his aspirations, but more importantly, he sees the Merengues as a more blooming side with an attractive gameplay.

Both rivals need players for various reasons

Real Madrid are expecting Luka Modric to leave sooner or later and in spite of tipping Federico Valverde to assume responsibility from the Croatia international, Florentino Perez has an eye on landing the 48 million euro man. Moreover, it comes as a rather harsh decision for Barcelona who are in need of midfielders.

Arturo Vidal and Ivan Rakitic are almost certainly going to depart this summer whereas Arthur Melo is also expected to follow suit. With three casualties in their engine room, Quique Setien will need additions and that of Miralem Pjanic will not be enough. As such, Thiago would’ve been a brilliant recruit but attentions must now turn elsewhere.

Which midfielders do you think the Catalan giants must target as replacements for Vidal and Rakitic?
