Many believed that the former midfielder would join the Catalans once former coach, Ernesto Valverde, had been fired but the timing of the matter was working against Xavi’s idea of making a return.
The now Al Sadd coach preferred to wait for the perfect opportunity to reunite with his former teammates as the current board and coach struggle to improve the current squad. Quique Setien’s arrival was meant to slowly bring back the philosophies of Barca that follows closely to that of Johan Cruff.
As a fan of Cruff, Setien had adapted his tactics to cater to the Dutchman’s philosophy but even the well-experienced coach is struggling to fix the issues lurking over the current squad at Camp Nou.
There is no doubt in anyone’s mind as to whether Xavi would ever return as a Blaugrana coach but it is the matter of when. The Spaniard has revealed that he desires to return at the right time and while there, be given full control over decisions.
What Xavi has to say?
Sport reports that the former Barca no. 6 has opened up about his future and what he has planned.
"“The biggest hope I have now is to be Barca coach and get Barca back to winning ways. Not me but these players and Barca triumphing. And as a consequence, our technical staff, who are preparing for it a lot and it makes us really excited.” Xavi said"
The legend reveals that he is closely working with his technical staff to prepare for his eventual return, but it has to be a completely new project that does not involve the current issues that have been haunting the club for the past few years.
There is a bigger problem at Camp Nou concerning not only the club’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, but also coach Quique Setien with reports claiming that the dressing room is upset with the way the Spanish coach has been managing his matches.
Xavi has stated that he desires to return but only under a new presidentship which would allow him to make the required changes as he sees fit.
"“I’m a club man. I would like to return at the right moment to start a project from zero. I’ve said it a lot of times but I want to take footballing decisions at Barcelona. It’s clear that after the elections the stage would be set, of course. I’m not ruling anything out. They came for me in January, we were speaking. I told them the circumstances and timing weren’t right.”"
The days to Xavi’s return may, in fact, be very near as the current board is under heavy criticism especially concerning the way they are handling the current transfer market with respect to Arthur Melo‘s sale.
