GOAL reports that according to the Cadena SER, the captain of Barca has considered leaving the club after his contract expires in the summer of 2021. Messi’s statement has come as a surprise to many as the Argentine forward was set to sign a contract extension until 2023 along with an increase in his salary.
The reason behind Lionel Messi’s threat to the board
The reasons behind Messi’s threat to Barcelona still remains unknown, however, reports from several sources claim that the captain has reportedly fallen out with the board and the current coaching staff on several occasions.
It seems like the Argentine forward has actually reached his boiling point with the board and their foolish operations. Josep Maria Bartomeu’s tenure as the president of the club has been nothing short of several controversies so far. Apart from the long list of flop signings and unnecessary departures made by the board, Bartomeu had even hired a hacking company to defame the club and its current players.
Leo’s threat might because of the board that has been the primary concern for Barca’s downfall and the rise of Real Madrid, as they Los Vinkingos were once buried in the dust under the presidential rule of Juan Laporta Sandro Rusell at the Camp Nou.
The report from GOAL also claims that Zinedine Zidane has stated that he personally would not want Messi to leave since the best players of the league must remain here in Spain. The Spanish league has already lost its popularity after Cristiano Ronaldo left for Juventus in the summer of 2018 and if Lionel Messi leaves as well then it would be the nail in the coffin for the La Liga Santander.
What do you make of Messi’s remarks? This is not the first time the forward has threatened to leave the club as he has done the same in 2016 as well. What is your opinion on the current situation?
