The Barcelona right-back is currently on loan at Real Betis.

As Barcelona look to raise more money to fund summer transfers, a new name has emerged as the next player likely to be sold to do just that.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the club want to cash in on the Brazilian right-back Emerson who is playing at Betis.

The report claims that the Catalans think it could be good business to sell him as the market for him grows.

The sale of Real Madrid’s Achraf Hakimi to Inter Milan seems to have been the turning point. Initially, the plan for Emerson was to stay another season and continue developing at Betis.

Eventually he would come back to Barcelona and take over for Nelson Semedo, who is another player they seemingly want to move on, or for Sergi Roberto who may move back to midfield.

With Hakimi going to Inter, there is now a vacancy in the Borussia Dortmund defense. There does appear to be interest from the German side despite already signing PSG’s Thomas Meunier on a free transfer.

Selling Emerson does pose a risk to Barcelona.

In addition to Dortmund, sides like Everton, Newcastle and Tottenham are rumored to be interested though no formal offer has been submitted.

Barcelona would be taking a risk should they sell Emerson. They are already considering selling Semedo and as versatile as he may be, Sergi Roberto is not a viable long-term option at right-back.

What this means is they could potentially be in a position where they themselves have to go into the transfer market to find a right-back. It is unlikely that they would give an opportunity to any of the Barça B players.

The only other right-back on the team, Moussa Wague, is also on the transfer list so he is not an option either.

But it’s all about making money at this point for a club who finds themselves in a precarious financial situation. It is important for the current board to present a stable financial position ahead of next year’s elections.

One of the easiest, and quickest, ways to do that is to sell some of the players. Fellow Brazilian Arthur was a casualty of that and now it looks like Emerson will be as well.
