This season has been Barca’s worst defensive performance, the Catalans have conceded 36 league goals in just 35 league matches, which is one of their worst ever defensive stats in the last few years.
Jordi Alba, Nelson Semedo, Samuel Umtiti, Junior Firpo, and Gerard Pique have been poor for most parts of the season and have stepped up occasionally. Only Clement Lenglet has performed consistently at the highest level to keep the club in the title race along with Marc-Andre ter Stegen‘s heroic saves.
However, the Blaugrana has a few bright talented defenders including the likes of Jean-Clair Todibo and Ronald Araujo who have the potential to form the next centre-back partnership to dominate European football in the future.
For the upcoming season of 2020/21, Quique Setien believes that the club needs a versatile defender that can play as a centre-back or a full-back after all the second choices have failed to impress the former Real Betis coach namely Samuel Umtiti, Nelson Semedo, and Junior Firpo.
Barcelona has reportedly considered signing David Alaba of Bayern Munich who has the skill set to play as a winger, full-back, midfielder, and centre-back. The Austrian footballer can be considered as one of the most versatile players in world football.
Will Bayern Munich let their superstar leave?
Mirror has reported that the 28-year-old defender has been given the green light by the 2019-20 Bundesliga champions to leave the club this summer for the right price. Since the Austrian is on the final year of his contract, the Bavarian’s cannot afford to lose him on a free transfer after 12 months and have thus considered to cash in on him this summer.
The report states that the Bundesliga giants are considering offers around 35 million euros, the same figure is also demanded for Thiago Alcantara who has reportedly handed in a transfer request as he craves for a new challenge.
Should Barca offer 70 million euros and snatch both the players this summer or just pay 35 million euros for David Alaba?
