Barcelona and Real Madrid have been competing to sign Fabian Ruiz for almost a year or more now. Both the Spanish giants rate the Serie A midfielder highly due to his immense potential along with his versatility.

Since the modern game has evolved into a fast-paced style of football which is extremely physically demanding it has also had a major impact on what is demanded from a midfielder. The modern game requires midfielders to attack and defend throughout the game like box to box midfielders.

The very evolution of the game has seen classic number “10’s” such as Mesut Ozil and James Rodriguez lose their position in the starting eleven, however, Fabian Ruiz of Napoli is the perfect combination of a number 10 and a box to box midfielder. The Spaniard can play as CAM, CM, and even as CDM when required due to his extreme versatility.

Quique Setien believes that the addition of the former Real Betis man would prove to be pivotal for Barcelona next season as Fabian can play anywhere in the midfield and could act as backup midfielder for all the positions.

Real Madrid has considered to part ways with Fabian’s former teammate Dani Ceballos this summer and the Los Blancos consider Fabian Ruiz to be the ideal replacement. However, Diaro GOL reports that Florentino Perez is quite skeptical about signing the Serie A midfielder since the player’s club have reportedly demanded a fee worth 100 million euros.

Despite Fabian being a favourite at the president’s box at the Santiago Bernabeu, Florentino Perez has no intention of splashing 100 million euros on the midfielder as the Los Blancos have other signings on their agenda.

Barcelona now sees clear daylight in signing their long term target and the 24-year-old midfielder to make the big jump in his career to the Camp Nou. However, the Catalans would have to first sell Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho in the summer to gather the funds for Fabian.
