Barcelona have considered Lautaro Martinez their prime target for the summer and the long-term successor to Suarez.

As per Daily Mail, the move will have to wait for another 12 months, though. However, the silver lining in this for Barcelona is that the 22-year-old is willing to wait for another year to seal his Barcelona dream.

Martinez has been in sublime touch off-late, finding the net aa total of 18 times this season and assisting on 6 occasions. Hailed as one of the brightest talents of the game, he has attracted interest from the former Premier League champions, Manchester City.

While Martinez’s release clause of £101 million a few days back, it all comes down to the negotiations with Inter Milan and simply put, Barcelona just do not have the resources with them now; to enter a conference room with Inter. Manchester City on the other hand, do have the financial resources and might very well be able to land him if the Argentine striker decides to change  his mind before the end of the window.

There’s an ongoing storm at Barcelona with the team set to go trophy-less in a season for the first time in 6 years; they won the Spanish Cup in 2014 though. There have been rumours surrounding Messi’s future at the club with the 33-year-old said to have lost all his faith in the board and his team, given their recent performances. The Argentine ace has been very vocal this season and at times, has been critical of his team’s performance as well. Not long ago, he called Barcelona a “weak side” who were unworthy of the UCL title.

This just shows the pinnacle of the iceberg and the Barcelona think-tank have got a lot to ponder about. A few days back, the equation was simple. Get either of Neymar or Martinez and that will automatically get Messi to stay. They have already completed a transfer deal in which they got Miralem Pjanic for Arthur Melo, marking their fourth major transfer blunder in the last 3 years.

The average age of the squad is around 27 and it hasn’t touched that number in a very long time. The attack has been heavily reliant on Messi and has failed to deliver in crunch situations. The team has simply lacked balance since the departure of Neymar and their struggles have gotten worse this year. Pjanic deal looks about their only activity this window, given their financial situation and that means that they will have to be on top of their game next season, without many fresh reinforcements, if they do desire to keep their prized possession in Lionel Messi.
