The Catalan side officially lost the La Liga crown to arch-rivals Real Madrid after dropping multiple points as a result of their inconsistency. While the club’s coach Quique Setien remains under heavy supervision, the squad have a couple of weeks before they have to experience a tough Champions League campaign.
Blaugrana’s chances at European glory this year look grim as they await their second-leg clash against Napoli, who could potentially cause an upset depending on what version of Barca appears in August. The real challenge begins when they do beat Napoli with Bayern Munich, Chelsea. Real Madrid, Manchester City, Juventus, and Lyon being named as the potential opponents before the Finals on 23rd August.
The dominating performance against Alaves caused many fans to wonder why this side fails to perform in a similar fashion week in and week out with their biggest weakness being inconsistency. Messi had spoken after the 2-1 defeat to Osasuna on Thursday that the game was a reflection of the entire season and the squad, coaching staff and the board must be self-critical.
The league, however, ended in a positive note with Barca showing that they are capable of playing electrifying football and that is exactly what they need to do next month. Messi, after the match, opened up about the next step towards success,
"“”We did a lot of self-criticism [After Osasuna] and realised a lot of things. We didn’t have a great season.” Messi said post-match.“Today is a step forward in terms of attitude and commitment, which is what you always have to have. You have to at least match the attitude of any rival; if not more.” He continued.Source Goal."
The Argentine maestro believes that the squad have been weak and what they need is a sense of desire which will result in a more intensive and energetic performance. It is the drive and hunger for success that would ensure that Setien’s men do not continue their disappointing run, and a new Barca emerges when they compete in the Champions League in August.
