Barcelona forward Lionel Messi sees his efforts go down the drain.

Barcelona ace Lionel Messi was at his magical best in La Liga Santander this season. The Argentina international struck 25 times across 33 appearances this season and also broke the award for most assists by former teammate Xavi. Messi finished the campaign with 22, two more than the Spaniard had achieved some years ago.

More from Everything Barca

While Messi sealed the Pichichi Trophy and was involved in a truckload of goals, one would argue that they came at the worst time for the Blaugrana and perhaps even with what’s going on in the world. Lionel Messi has displayed clear resentment at the Barca board and is absolutely fed up with the club for their regular mishaps across all competitions this season.

Looking at the Barcelona captain’s numbers, one would believe that they had won La Liga, but it suggests something else which should be alarming for the club. Despite their greatest player’s heroics, the club was able to finish behind Real Madrid and ended the campaign with no less than 13 matches without a win. Not to mention, Messi was teamed up with a young Ansu Fati and didn’t have the likes of Luis Suarez beside him for long.

Individual awards out of sight as well.

Having said that, the announcement by France Football which cancelled the Ballon d’Or was another statement that may have annoyed Messi. Though he will most likely finish the season without silverware, there was a huge chance of him being nominated for the award given the sponsorships and marketability that come into play for the POTY award.

All in all, Messi has been robbed of several trophies because teammates around him were lacklustre and he had to work under two spineless managers during the season. Besides, the board has done nothing to plan for the future and with ageing players next season, it’s going to get worse and Messi will once again shoulder the burden without much reward.
