Barcelona boss Quique Setien’s plan for the Champions League
The Perfect Tactical Approach
The perfect tactic for Barcelona has to be inspired by their dominating performance against Villarreal and Alaves. Both games ended in a massive lead for the giants after Setien’s men dominated their opposition with a rare display of possession-based football.
It was a diamond formation of 4-2-2 with Griezmann and Suarez playing as the left and right striker respectively, with Messi in his favourite false 9 role. The attackers were supported by two central midfielders who often played higher up the pitch, allowing Sergio Busquets to be the sole midfielder controlling the pace of the match. This in turn allowed Busquets to take complete control over the midfield and also have 7 players ahead of him as passing options.
The two full-backs played as wingers which helped the whole group play extremely close to each other, reducing the risk of losing the possession while using each other to bounce the ball past the opposition.
Setien must work to improve this tactic as much as possible as it was the only one that showed the potential to be the perfect approach to ensure European glory this season.
