At 24 years of age, Martial has the capability to become a huge success at Camp Nou, especially if his 22 goals across all competitions are an indication. Express via Athletic, have reported the Barcelona Scouts’ interest in Martial and the reluctance of Sporting Director, Eric Abidal.
Former United Manager, Jose Mourinho, was restructuring the team and didn’t give the 24-year-old a lot of game time which was unacceptable for the player. Apparently Abidal is concerned about the striker’s attitude in training and worries that his ambition could turn into frustration during training sessions.
The English Club’s current manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, on the other hand, gave the Frenchman many opportunities to shine and he certainly didn’t disappoint, quickly becoming a regular in the team. However, this isn’t necessarily a good thing as the Norwegian Coach believes that competition stems drive in a player and was quoted stating,
"“You need competition for places at Manchester United. If you think you’ve got a divine right to be playing every game and are doing so well that we’re not going to look for players to replace you, you’re in the wrong place.”Source: Express"
Despite Martial’s performance, his future at Old Trafford is not secure, as even United’s legend, Gary Neville says,
"“When I say that United need a centre-forward, it’s not because they should sell Anthony Martial, it’s because they need a centre-forward.”Source: Goal"
Another club legend who has doubts about the French national is, Andy Cole,
"“He came for big money and he’s very talented. He has to show more desire and passion at times.”Source: Express"
United acquired Martial in 2015 for 36 Million pounds and now has roughly a market value of 48 Million pounds. It remains to be seen whether Barcelona would like to risk spending big money on a player who isn’t passionate about playing despite his talent, and perhaps end up encountering another Antoine Griezmann situation.
