Barcelona need to load off four players this summer to survive

The 2019/20 season has shown the true colours of Barcelona and how the mismanagement by the board over the years is finally showing its effects. The Catalans have relied on Lionel Messi all season and had it not been Leo who stepped up this season then a top-four finish in the La Liga Santander would be out of the squad’s capability.

The Blaugrana are aware that if they continue this way then Real Madrid is going to run riot and the trophy cabinet at the Bernabeu would continue to have additions while the Camp Nou cabinet would remain untouched.

Lionel Messi’s contract is set to expire next summer in 2021 and the captain has already threatened the club regarding an extension due to the current state. To keep Messi at the Camp Nou the board has to make changes during the summer transfer market, however, COVID-19 has had a severe impact on the financial backing of the club leaving them with a severely limited budget to spend.

As desperate times call for desperate measures, here is a list of players Barcelona have to sell this summer to survive next season and make a few decent signings over the summer market.

LUIS SUAREZ

The former Liverpool striker has had his worst season this year at the Camp Nou since he signed for the Blaugrana in 2014 for 82 million euros. Suarez has struggled with keeping fit this season after sustaining a major blow to his knee that had practically ruled him out for the entire season as the Uruguayan striker needed surgery.

The suspension of the league due to COVID-19 provided Suarez ample time to successfully recover. Although Luis Suarez has not had a poor season if we look at his stats as the former Ajax man has scored 16 goals and has provided 8 assists in just 22 starts in the Spanish league which is quite impressive.

However, Suarez has been rusty all season long and has shown serious signs of slowing down due to his weight management issues along with age. The 33-year-old is deteriorating with age at a fast rate and now the South American has entered the final year of his contract.

A contract renewal is certainly not on the cards of the board at Camp Nou. Having said that, the ideal option would be to sell the striker this season and cash in on him rather than losing the player for free in 2021.
