Barcelona fails to recognize quality as Chelsea aim to sign the youngster.

After Barcelona failed to trust their La Masia graduate, Chelsea now looks to secure the defender for themselves as part of a major rebuilding project.

More from Everything Barca

22-year-old Barca academy prospect Marc Cucurella had big dreams of playing for the first-team at Camp Nou. The club’s board, however, initially believed that a loan deal at Getafe would help the Spaniard develop further as they continue their search for a backup to their first-choice left-back, Jordi Alba.

Junior Firpo was the substitute to Alba but his lackluster performance this season has convinced the club to look for an alternative after placing Firpo on the transfer market. Many believed that this could possibly open the doors for Cucurella especially as Barca triggered his 4 million euro buyback option in 2019 from Eibar.

They, surprisingly, immediately loaned him out to Getafe, giving them an option to secure the youngster permanently for 6 million, along with 40% of the cut from any future sales. In March 2020, the Spanish side triggered the purchase meaning Marc can no longer be wearing the Blaugrana colors.

Chelsea, however, does consider the player a valuable asset and are ready to pay 30 million euros to secure the Spanish international. The Blues coach, Frank Lampard, had initially targetted Ben Chilwell but Leicester City’s 90 million asking fees have forced them to look elsewhere.

The 22-year-old has emerged as the perfect alternative for the Premier League side and Barca might truly regret their sale as they themselves are looking for a left-back. On top of that, Getafe and Barca signed a new agreement where the Catalans got paid 10 million euros to reduce the percentage of future sales to 10%.
