Barcelona lose their star signing as the player has reportedly signed a new deal

Barcelona has been dealt with a massive blow that makes everything a lot worse than it already is at the Camp Nou. The Catalans have been extremely weak this season defensively and the club has been reliant on Clement Lenglet and Marc-Andre ter Stegen to perform consistently and to prevent the opposition from scoring.

Quique Setien has even expressed his opinion to the board regarding the defense and the importance of signing a centre-back in the summer ahead of strikers and midfielders. The Blaugrana have been heavily linked with Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan and Neymar of Paris Saint-Germain, however, Setien believes that the first priority should be the defence that has been exploited this season on numerous ocassions.

Barca has been linked with a few defenders as well including Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig who has grown into a wanted target at almost every single European club.

Upamecano has all the qualities that Setien requires in a defender at the Camp Nou as the young Frenchman is a calm and composed passer of the ball, physically very strong, fast and agile and is strong in the air.

However, reports now suggest that Barca will not be able to sign Upamecano

Although Dayot Upamecano has been considered as the ideal signing for the Catalans, Eldes marque reports that the defender and RB Leipzig have agreed to a contract renewal. The German team even announced it on their Twitter handle that stated an extension till the summer of 2023.

With Upamecano out of the picture, Barcelona has to reconsider their options for the summer transfer market. Some of the ideal candidates that Barca could sign at the end of the season are Diego Carlos of Sevilla, Ruben Dias of Benfica, and Pau Torres of Villarreal.

However, it will not be as easy as it may seem as all the three mentioned names have been linked with several other European clubs which would certainly complicate the bidding process. If Bartomeu fails to sign a defender this summer, then the ideal situation would be to keep Jean-Clair Todibo and Ronald Araujo for the 2020/21 season.
