Barcelona might be closer to signing Bayern Munich star for free as the defender is yet to reach an agreement to remain in Bavaria.

Barcelona have a great relationship with the Austrian especially considering the fact that they have been trying to lure him to Camp Nou for the past two seasons but failed to reach a deal with his employers.

More from Everything Barca

Bayern are having a hard time convincing the 28-year-old to remain as he desires a change which hints towards the idea that a contract renewal will never be reached. According to Sport, Alaba has offered himself to the Spanish side as he wants to play in Spain before his retirement, but a move in the next transfer window seems unlikely because of the economic crisis at Barca.

This, however, does not stop the Austrian from joining the Catalans for free once his contract expires in 2021. Blaugrana have been keen on securing the defender for quite some time with Lionel Messi also requesting his signing. He is known to be a reliable and versatile player capable of playing midfield, left-back and center-back role.

After constant rejections from the German champions, Barca are finally able to secure their desired defender with only 12 months remaining in his contract. Any contract renewal talks have been halted with his agent, Pini Zahai, demanding 20 million euros to extend his stay as only a large sum of money would convince Alaba to remain.

His desire for a new environment and competition elsewhere has convinced him to reduce his demands for other clubs such as Barca with his father running the negotiations. It remains to be seen whether Munich fulfills his demands but if they don’t, the Catalans could secure one of the best talents around for free.
