Lionel Messi’s tactical requests let Barcelona down in Lisbon.

Barcelona had the most embarrassing night in the club’s history after being humiliated by Bayern Munich, 8-2 in the Champions League quarter-final in Lisbon. Quique Setien will mostly be sacked and the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Xavi have already been linked with the Camp Nou’s hot seat, where expectation will be higher than ever next year.

The defeat on Friday evening was the Catalans’ heaviest in the European Cup but their Bavarian counterparts kept marching on towards what’s looking like a second treble and historic sixth Champions League triumph. With that said, the defeat may have come as a result of Lionel Messi’s infringement in the tactical setup, Diario GOL reports.

Quique Setien was hoping to play a 4-3-3 that would counter Bayern’s formation in a like-for-like manner, but the club’s captain’s endless probing meant that he eventually went for a 4-4-2. Antoine Griezmann didn’t start from the first kick of the ball and instead Sergi Roberto was given the nod in a four man midfield.

Reverting to 4-3-3 was no good and too late.

Hansi Flick’s side smashed four in the first half and Roberto did no good to provide defensive cover to the Blaugrana’s backline which was at its worst in recent times. He was eventually taken off at half-time with Griezmann coming onto the pitch instead but as things panned out, it was too late and the Frenchman failed to settle in the second half.

La Liga’s runners-up were battered by four goals once again in the second half as they looked hapless and lost. Lionel Messi was one of the worst players on the pitch, despite Setien supposedly following his tactical plan and the Argentinian international has lesser completed passes than even Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

With Setien already having one foot out of the Camp Nou amid recent developments, there’s a chance of a major managerial change at the club this summer which is doing no good as has been noticed this season. Where do you think the club must go from here and should they continue to adhere to Messi’s infringing in matters?
