Ronald Koeman’s appointment by Barcelona will have major internal ramifications.

Barcelona officially fired Quique Setien on Monday evening and said that the new coach will be announced in the coming days. Ronald Koeman taking up the job seems inevitable after a number of reliable sources confirmed the same and also stated that the Dutchman was spotted at the city’s airport across the weekend to hold talks.

Diario GOL however reports that the former Everton manager’s appointment will come with several constraints, some of which are under the control of Josep Maria Bartomeu, and others not. What’s in the current board’s control is the players they sign to support Koeman, but whether he lasts longer than a year is not.

Joan Laporta is keen on landing one of Pep Guardiola or Xavi as head coach, meaning Koeman will likely to be shown the door next year when Bartomeu’s tenure is imminently halted. With that said, even the other candidate in Victor Font wants either of the Spaniards to lead the club in the upcoming years.

For the time being, Koeman has asked for several signings, especially his compatriot in Donny van de Beek as well as former academy products Thiago Alcantara and Eric Garcia. Besides the inflow of players, he also wants to get rid of the older crop such as Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and Ivan Rakitic, and underperforming players like Junior Firpo and Nelson Semedo.

Ronald Koeman is leaving a dream squad that is certainly a favourite to win the European Championship next summer to join a Barcelona side that is in absolute shambles. Given his commitment and desire to join the club in such a situation as well, it’s imperative that they promise him a good squad and terms should he be asked to leave in 2021.

Do you think Koeman will stay as the Blaugrana coach beyond a year?
