Ronald Koeman has hit the ground running as the manager of Barcelona. The former Everton coach has taken over a high risk project, however, Koeman is willing to put his legacy and job on the line to help restructure Barca.

More from Everything Barca

The midfield at the Camp Nou is of grave concern for the Dutchman. Koeman prefers to play a high press as seen with the Netherlands national team, however, with the current aging midfield department it seems highly unlikely that Koeman could get the best out of them.

The Express reports that the former Everton manager has contacted Liverpool’s Dutch pressing machine, Georginio Wijnaldum. The Liverpool man may not be the most technically or skillful midfielder, however, one thing is for the certain that 29-year-old can press like no other and is the focal reason why Klopp’s gegen pressing style of football is a success.

How would Barca manage to sign him?

Gini Wijnaldum is on the final year of his contract that is set to expire in the summer of 2021. It is reported that Ronald Koeman has already asked his compatriot not to sign a contract extension and to join forces with him at the Camp Nou.

Wijnaldum could either be sold for cheap this summer since he is on the final twelve months of his contract or Klopp could lose him on a free transfer next summer.

It all now boils down to whether the Merseyside club would want to cash in on the Dutch midfielder now or lose him on a free transfer. The player is currently valued at 40 million euros, however, the figure could be reduced significantly as his contract is coming to an end.
