Barcelona captain Lionel Messi wanting to leave during the club’s worst phase shows that he’s an epitome of a poor leader.

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has been the subject of transfer talk in recent months. The Argentina international is wanting to leave the Blaugrana after two decades at the club, primarily because he sees them heading nowhere. That is exactly where his betrayal of the club starts, unfortunately setting a poor example.

More from Everything Barca

Messi is the best player ever in the history of the club, perhaps the greatest to ever grace the sport, but what he’s doing is far from right considering that the Catalan side was the only one by his side since he was a child. The now 33-year-old checked into Barcelona aged 13 and was supported by the club especially during the phase in which he encountered a problem with his growth hormones. Barca paid the full treatment fees.

While the player was in Argentina, it seemed like no other club in Europe was willing to risk signing a teenager back then. Barca however did so and made Messi who he is now. Needless to mention, he has played a crucial role in putting the La Liga outfit on the level it is now, but however good an individual may be, the club has to come first, undoubtedly.

Now when the situation is at its worst for Barcelona, Messi is throwing his hands in the air and is more than happy to walk away for free. Looking at other players who were lauded as loyal men, the Argentine seems a rather fragile personality. Exampling one of several legendary figures, Alessandro del Piero stayed at Juventus even when they were relegated to the Serie B whilst most of the other first-team players made their way out.

Josep Maria Bartomeu and his board of directors are far from what Barca ideally need, but everything that Messi is doing seems more like a stunt to dissolve the hierarchy. One wouldn’t be surprised if that actually happens and subsequently, he ends up signing another lucrative contract, something that seems an annual event for a supposedly loyal man.

To top everything off, Lionel Messi is ready to leave the club and wants to walk away for free. In the midst of a pandemic, when the club is effectively on the verge of a gigantic debt, their greatest ever player, revenue-wise too, isn’t being considerate. What’s sad is that the board will certainly not last beyond a year now, but the lasting impact of the captain’s departure might just make Barca another specimen of the AC Milan side of late.

Suarez on the other hand, despite being asked to leave, has showed in at the club for PCR testing instead of turning in a frown over the club. He did insist that he will stay on the bench and earn the 14 million euros due to him in the final year of his contract, but one would imagine him regularly featuring since a replacement’s signing looks difficult.

Frankly speaking, Messi wouldn’t have identified a better timing to bring up his fiasco. The 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich seems an age-old occurrence now, thanks to his antiques. At this point in time, the relationship between Barca and the player seems to be beyond repair and with La Liga also now siding with the club’s claim of a 700 million euros’ release clause as the reference cost, it’d be interesting to see which way the tide flows.
