Barcelona and Lyon yet to reach a deal for Memphis Depay.

Reports out of the Netherlands may have jumped the gun when they announced that Barcelona had reached a deal for Lyon forward Memphis Depay.

The Catalan side have categorically denied that any sort of deal has been reached regarding the Dutch player.

More from Everything Barca

According to Mundo Deportivo, not only do sources close to the club say no agreement has been reached with Lyon, they also say that no agreement has been reached with the player himself.

The initial report stated that Barcelona was set to sing Depay for €25 million with €5 million in add-ons and that he would be presented by the end of the week.

This new rumor comes days after the club all but gave up hopes of signing Inter Milan striker, Lautaro Martinez.

The supposed signing of Depay came as a bit of a shock because of how Barcelona’s transfer season has gone so far. The club do not have a lot to work with.

This drum has been beaten ad nauseam but the Catalans are working with a very tight budget. All summer long the onus has been put on selling players because the bottom line is that they simply cannot buy players until they sell some.

As it stands, the only player they’ve been able to sell is Ivan Rakitic. Arturo Vidal is very close to joining Inter Milan but that move has yet to be made official. Barcelona are poised to get even less than what they got from Sevilla for Rakitic.

Getting rid of high-wage earners is what the club are focusing on at this point because they know they are not going to get much in terms of transfer fees for their veterans.

Throwing another wrench into the Depay signing is that Luis Suarez is still a blaugrana player. One. of the roadblocks when they were chasing Martinez is that they could not bring him on while Suarez was still there. That hasn’t changed so it would not make sense if they were to bring in Depay at this moment.

While Depay’s arrival is unlikely to happen this week, it may eventually be pushed over the line simply because he is a player Ronald Koeman wants. But for Barcelona, it is imperative they move players on first. Especially in attack where they have an overabundance of players as it is.
