Lionel Messi desires to lift the 2021 Copa America with Argentina.

Lionel Messi is arguably the greatest footballer the world has witnessed and the upcoming Copa 2021 will be absolutely vital for him. Although the Argentine national has won everything he could in club football including various individual awards as well, one thing he has been coveting is an international trophy. Many critics of Lionel Messi keep dwelling on the single fact that the maestro could not help his nation win any trophies.

The 33-year-old is yet to have a test on international glory on a senior level. He did win the 2008 Olympics gold medal with the under 20s team however, that was his first and last tournament win. Since that fateful day in Beijing, he has gone on to play in multiple cup finals only to lose all of them.

In 2014 Argentina faced Germany in the FIFA World Cup Finals and although the Argentines played well enough to take the game to extra time, they ended up losing 1-0. The next year in 2015, Messi once again reached the finals of another international tournament, this time the Copa America but lost to the host nation, Chile in the finals. In 2016, a special edition of the Copa America was held and Argentina yet again reached the finals but succumbed to rivals, Chile a second time. After the third consecutive defeat in the finals, the Barcelona legend stated in the post-match interview that he had done everything he could and it hurt him not to be a champion.

The world was in shock when Messi announced his retirement but he then proceeded to quickly overturn his decision and took part in the 2018 World Cup where they lost to eventual winners, France. Now the upcoming Copa America is his last chance to lift an international trophy. The player despite suffering through many heartbreaks seems enthusiastic and believes that this might be the year when they finally win the trophy. The tournament is being hosted by Argentina and Colombia and thus it will be a chance for him to win his country a silverware at home.

Leo is optimistic because after the dismissal of Jorge Sampaoli, the new manager, Lionel Scaloni, has made drastic changes by leaving out many big names and giving chances to the youth. People like Gonzalo Higuain and Ever Banega were replaced by younger talents like Lautaro Martinez, Giovani Lo Celso, and Leandro Paredes. The addition of young blood in the team has brought it back to competitive levels and the 6 time Ballon D’Or winner intends to finally secure an international trophy.

The player believes that the new improved team is capable of reaching great heights and even though he does have his eyes set on the 2022 World Cup as well, winning the Copa America first will put Argentina back on the map and they might once again be one of the most feared teams in the world.
