Barcelona have put themselves in such a terrible position right now that it seems Lionel Messi was right in every way he protested to the board.

Barcelona completed an agreement with Atletico Madrid over the transfer of Luis Suarez in the later hours of Wednesday, thereby ending an illustrious era in the club’s history. However, the Uruguayan’s departure has left a bigger hole than ever in the squad and at the worst time possible for the Blaugrana- when they cannot afford any signings.

At this point in time, Ronald Koeman has already sold off four players who have practically no backup or one that is too young or not of enough quality. The squad’s depth has taken a massive hit and therefore, it is difficult to see the Blaugrana competing in all three competitions this year because signings seem a bit out of reach right now too.

Lionel Messi was rallying behind the board to sign the likes of Joshua Kimmich and Lautaro Martinez while the pandemic was not on and also urged his seniors to get rid of the deadwood, which has now yielded close to no significant amount. The board basically paid no attention to the player’s demands and only signed unnecessary players like Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho- not to mention Miralem Pjanic, a hysteric move in truth.

Heading into the 2020/21 campaign, the Catalans have an ageing squad with not much to be optimistic about. The defence has been as lacklustre as it has ever been in recent memory, whereas the frontline is filled with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho- all of whom have not delivered even up to half of their price tag.

Josep Maria Bartomeu’s hegemony saw Barcelona win one treble and several other trophies, but with more problems than ever. It’s easier said than done, but with the situation of debt and dire needs that the current chief has put the club in, it will be difficult for even Joan Laporta or Victor Font to turn over the situation within just one year.
