Sergi Roberto of Barcelona drops a subtle hint while on an interview on the possible future of his teammate and captain, Lionel Messi

Barcelona has started their 2020/21 league campaign in a great fashion against Villarreal. Ronald Koeman’s first official game in charge ended with a 4-0 victory for the Catalans. The fixture had several positives to take, including Ansu Fati’s fine form, Philippe Coutinho showing his true colours from his natural position, and the official debut of Miralem Pjanic who also impressed the manager despite coming on as a substitute.

Under the 4-2-3-1 formation set up by Koeman, the Catalans seem to be playing more fast and fluid counter-attacking football. However, the defense still remains a weak link that must be upgraded soon if this side is to win the La Liga or the Champions League.

One can be optimistic that this Barca side could possibly end the season with a trophy or two under Ronald Koeman, however, it is still early days.

Lionel Messi seemed bit off-color against Villarreal, however, the 33-year-old right-winger will be back at his best soon.

But the question is whether Messi will continue next season when his contract expires. His Spanish teammate, Sergi Roberto, believes that if the club plays good football than Messi might just stay back, according to an interview with SPORT.

Under Ronald Koeman, that does seem like a possibility. The squad depth also looks a lot better than what Quique Setien had. The return of Coutinho from loan, the signing of Trincao, and the recovery of Ousmane Dembele has added a lot more depth to the side.

Hopefully, Barca can assure Messi a winning project in the next elections and that could play a crucial role for the captain to sign an extension. Remember, Messi does not have an issue with the club, he has an issue with the board only.
