Josep Maria Bartomeu will surely go down in the Barcelona history as a pathetic president, primarily due to how he has treated Lionel Messi of late.

Barcelona have failed to land anyone beside Sergino Dest in the summer transfer window so far despite parting ways with Arturo Vidal, Ivan Rakitic, Luis Suarez and Nelson Semedo in recent weeks. While the Blaugrana have been linked with several players, the saga surrounding a public feud between Josep Maria Bartomeu and Lionel Messi is the likely catalyst for the transfer activities, or rather the lack of them.

Lionel Messi was linked with a departure from the Camp Nou last month after officially submitting a request to leave, but there remained problems regarding how he could be released considering both parties were on two different spectrums. Messi ultimately ended up staying, but not without causing more controversy, though rightly.

The 33-year-old slammed Bartomeu and his board of directors for the way they have run the club in a public interview whereas he also took to Instagram while addressing Luis Suarez’s departure wherein he accused the club of mistreating the legendary figures. Messi is certainly right in his regard and the only reason behind his likely departure seemed Bartomeu, and the president has only further alienated the club’s talisman.

Josep Maria Bartomeu has very conveniently gotten rid of some of the most crucial Barca players so far, but he is yet to land the likes of Eric Garcia and Memphis Depay who are the need of the hour for a well-trimmed squad. With that being said, he will also refuse a departure until his tenure officially ends in spite of a vote of no confidence being discussed.

While it may have certainly been harsh on Barcelona and La Liga as a whole, Messi should have left the club for his own good because they simply don’t deserve someone as good as him. Moreover, the Argentinian is in the final years of his career and while his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo is having Serie A titles in the bag, the player in concern is being effectively held hostage by a president who will not be remembered very fondly.
