Barcelona’s talented youngster slams the club for their wayward methods

Marc Cucurella has slammed Barcelona for the way he was treated before being sold to Getafe on a permanent deal earlier this summer

The youth academy of Barcelona also known as La Masia is one of the finest youth academies when it comes to producing generational talents. La Masia has been home to Xavi Hernandez, Carles Puyol, Lionel Messi, and Andres Iniesta which proves how big a success the youth academy was at one time.

In 2012, the Catalans fielded an entire starting eleven from the La Masia against Levante in La Liga, which is a massive achievement for any football club. However, as the years passed, the use and involvement of the youth academy in the senior squad have decreased.

Under Josep Maria Bartomeu, the club has adopted a policy similar to Florentino Perez’s Galactico strategy that has seen several players from the youth academy go unnoticed.

Apart from Riqui Puig, one of the most promising talents in recent years from the youth academy was Marc Cucurella. The Spanish youngster was tipped to be a superstar as he was extremely versatile when coming up the ranks at La Masia.

However, Cucurella was loaned out to Eibar in 2018 and then subsequently to Getafe in 2019 where he made a name for himself.

In the 2019/20 season, the young Spanish defender rose to prominence as his physicality, work rate, balling winning and retaining ability was on full display at Getafe while being deployed as a left-back.

Many believed that the player would return in the summer of 2020/21 and replace Junior Firpo who has been a massive failure a the club. Cucurella would certainly be an upgrade for the club as the player is tactically sound while attacking and defending which makes an all-round wing-back that most modern full-backs lack.

However, Cucurella was sold to Getafe for just six million euros and the player stated that it was not up to him to continue at Barca, according to El Desmarque. The 22-year-old has not ruled out a return to the Camp Nou as of yet, however, he is certainly dejected by the way he was treated at the club despite being a graduate from the youth academy.

One of our own had to face the brunt of Josep Maria Bartomeu. Marc Cucurella would play a major role in solving the defensive issues, however, Bartomeu and his wayward methods led to the permanent sale of a generational talent.
