Barcelona are in a serious state of dilemma as their lucrative signing might leave for free in the summer of 2022 due to the lack of offers

The summer transfer window for Barcelona has been quite a busy and productive one. The Catalans kept the midnight oil burning until the very last hour of the transfer market as they were eager on signing Memphis Depay from Olympique Lyon who has been classified as a high priority target by Ronald Koeman.

However, Barca’s attempt to land the former Manchester United winger failed as according to the new La Liga rule. A club must sell a player from a similar position before they signing a player of the same position. In this case, it was Ousmane Dembele who was set to be discarded, as Ronald Koeman from day one had no plans of working with the former Borussia Dortmund man.

Dembele had to be sold for Depay to make way and it seemed like the French international was on his to Manchester United, however, the 23-year-changed his mind on deadline day. This certainly has not gone down well at the Camp Nou as Koeman lost out on Memphis Depay.

Manchester United was the only interested club to sign the 23-year-old forward and it seems like the Red Devils will not make an attempt to sign the player once again this winter after his recent behaviour.

Dembele was signed in the summer of 2017 for 105 million euros and currently is one of the best-paid players at the club. Given his history of injuries, most clubs are not interested in buying the player. Another factor is his wage, the 2018 World Cup winner wants a salary that is on par with his current paycheck if not more. No club in this world would be willing to meet that demand given the high possible risk of a long term injury to the player.

El Desmarque reports that the Catalan club now faces a serious dilemma as their lucrative signing could possibly leave for free in the summer of 2022 due to the lack of interest from other clubs. Barca certainly does not want this to happen as they want to receive a decent return on the investment they made in 2017.
